About Us

Gooding Funeral Services; Who We Are & Why We Care

About Gooding Funeral Services

Gooding Funeral Services is an independent, family-friendly, funeral home and is recommended by the Good Funeral Guide and by the Natural Death Centre. Located less than two and a half miles from Leeds City Centre; our central location allows families across the region, to receive a caring service that is easily accessible and convenient.

Still owned by the same family and with the founder's grandchildren now active in the profession, we are proud to have now had three generations working in our independent, family owned funeral firm.

Our family's historic ties to NHS health and social care means that we have help, supported and cared for generations of Leeds people - from all walks of life, for well over 60 years.

We feel proud to carry the Gooding name.

We consider our work to be our vocation; we work within the funeral profession because we too have suffered loss and bereavement and we know the level of service that we expect to receive from a professional funeral provider.

Our funeral directors are either National Association of Funeral Directors and individual members of the British Institute of Funeral Directors. Our team is comprised mostly of Leeds locals - so we know our city like the back of our hand.

We are experts in DIY funeral support, direct cremation, simple, eco-friendly and traditional funerals and we're specialists in the facilitation of international funeral repatriation too.

Call, contact or visit us today - we're here to support you.

Our Founder

Hugh Gooding

Having lost his father at home in Harehills some 5 years earlier, it was the death of his mother Beryl at St Gemma's Hospice in 1998, which truly inspired Hugh Gooding to become a funeral director.

Hugh was a real local lad who had lived in Leeds for almost 60 years. He had moved with his mother as a very small child, to join his father here in in the early 1950's. He loved everything about his city and his knowledge of Leeds and the surrounding area was unrivalled.

Hugh spent almost 10 years training with both independent and corporate funeral firms including Co-operative Group and Dignity across the region before he went on to qualify as a funeral director. He launched Hugh Gooding Funeral Services in May 2007 and immediately became the first black funeral director, of independent status in the North of England and only one of two black funeral directors in the UK at the time.

Hugh’s ethos was to provide personalised, compassionate care and an excellent standard of service to everyone. A naturally likeable chap, Hugh fostered warmth with the professional relationships he developed and his genuine caring and friendly demeanour was always received favourably those fortunate enough to have met him.

Sadly, following a short illness in 2012, Hugh passed away. His memory and his work lives on.
